Crafter in The Spotlight 59 - Itsy Bitsy

Hello arty-crafty folks,

Thursday’s back and so am I, with this week’s Crafter in the Spotlight. It’s Aparna Suresh who is going to share her story with us this week.

Aparna has always been passionate about art and calls ‘craft’ her new found love. She holds a Masters degree in Fine arts, which reflects her fervour for creative endeavours. Indian Vintage is Aparna’s favourite and she loves paper cutting and creating designs for her own charms.

How did Aparna get into crafting, what inspires her, what are her tips for fellow crafters, her favourite quote, how would she contribute to the crafting world if she had magical powers? Read answers to all these questions, discover more about her interesting journey and catch a glimpse of a step by step project by Aparna in this interview. Don’t forget to leave your comments for her.

Rashmi Closepet, MD, Itsy Bitsy: Tell us a bit about yourself & your background?  Tell us a bit about yourself & your background?

Aparna Suresh: My name is Aparna Suresh; an artist by passion and a mother of two beautiful children. I hold a master's degree in Fine Arts and it has helped me get creative in making bags and boxes. Crafting is my new found love and canvas painting is my all-time love. I am a Bharatnatyam dancer and have a keen interest in waste management.

RC: How did you get into crafting?
AS: While painting I saw myself slowly enjoying crafting too. I started to dabble on paper, wood, glass etc. Itsy Bitsy in Phoenix Mall, Bangalore is paradise for me as I started to buy my craft supplies from there. I started buying pattern papers, modpodge (even without knowing what it is used for) and other craft materials.

RC:  What is your favourite type of craft?
AS: I slowly saw myself up-cycling papers to journals, pieces of wood to frames or key holders, boxes to wall hangings, waste glasses to name plates etc.

RC:  What are your favourite products at Itsy Bitsy?
AS: Undoubtedly silicon glue is my favourite Itsy Bitsy product. Others are clear stamps, pattern papers, paper flowers, chalk paints and colour splashes.

RC:   If you had magical powers, how would you contribute to the crafting world?
AS: I love to do paper cutting. Most of the charms I create are from my own designs of papercuts. If I had magical powers I would mass produce my own papercuts designs.

RC:  Your prized possession in your craft stash from Itsy Bitsy
AS: Rubber stamps from the store are my prized possessions.

RC:  How would you describe your style of crafting?
AS: My style of crafting is Indian Vintage.

RC: How do you organize your time for crafting?
AS: Afternoons are my craft times.

RC: Tips for people who want to craft
AS: My tips to crafters will be; Experiment, Create artworks that can be used and UPCYCLE.

RC:  Your all -time favourite quote?
AS: My favourite quote "Live your passion."

Here is a gorgeous project by  Aparna  & step by step procedure:

This is a Kitchen cabinet door, that is being converted into a frame. Ensure usage of masking tape to avoid bleeding of the paint.

After first layer of Gesso is applied to the frame, allow it to dry. The frame was painted with acrylic cadmium yellow and to add more dimension to the monotonous yellow; shade of yellow ochre was added.

A vintage distressed look was created using Vermilion archival ink.

Impasto was mixed with acrylic blue to get a coloured texture paste

The cake stencil from Itsy Bitsy was placed for creating pattern on the frame and the impasto paste created in the aforementioned step was used to get the desired 3-D lace effect.

The final frame with a hand painted Lord Ganesha is ready!!

Here are a couple of  Aparna's other awesome creations:

Many congrats Aparna for being the CRAFTER IN THE SPOTLIGHT – ITSY BITSY!!

You will receive Rs.500/- Itsy Bitsy gift voucher 😊😊 & a Crafter in the Spotlight badge, which can be proudly displayed on the side bar of your blog and other platforms. Looking forward to many more creations, Happy Crafting!

Mixed Media Canvas ...Try, Try, Try again ......

Hi friends, Suman here,

Today I am sharing a mixed media canvas with you using the Color Splash and Gold Alcohol Splash sprays.

I really struggled with this one and tried many a times to work on this canvas. I will show you some picturess of my trials and failures with this one......
First time I created some texture on the background and added some random found objects like a plastic spoon, electronic parts, a plastic lid, dried paint brush and a broken plug with silicon glue and some metallic acrylic paint.......I even tore something out from the center of the composition (don't even remember what it was :) and it lied neglected for want of ideas ......

Then after few weeks I picked it again and tried some Alcohol Splash colors and Itsy Bitsy flowers and a bird bought from Itsy Bitsy long time ago.........I succeeded in creating MUD on the background :(

Can this be salvaged??? Very unhappy with myself........so it went back in the corner teasing me time and again ...........well........after few days I tried dry brushing with white Gesso on all the flowers, playing with a sentiment ......but.....even more unhappy with the results....and this time I seriously thought of throwing it in the bin.........

Well........to cut a long story short, am glad I did not give up :) while doing another canvas, I added Gesso randomly to the background and sprayed with Color Splash inks in Yellow, Blue, Pink and Green all over the canvas.......changed the composition ( if you see, the bird now sits in a different place perched on an ice cream stick and the canvas is turned so that the  flowers are in a horizontal arrangement)........let the inks dry completely and then added four to five layers of dry brushing with white gesso with drying in between to bring out the textures ......

Am sure happy that I did not give up, the outcome is even more beautiful than anything I had thought when I started it! So today no step -by-step cause it did not happen that way but a simple tale of  'Never to give up' God has more in store for you than you can ever Imagine...

Thank you so much my dear friends for your love and support always, it was such an honour to work with team Itsy Bitsy and my amazingly supportive team members. I have had a great time being a part of Itsy Bitsy family, many thanks to Rashmi Harish for everything !!

thank you for stopping by and have a great day

love

Revealing the New Itsy Bitsy Design Team

How time flies!! Half of 2017 is already over and we have enjoyed it thoroughly till now watching, learning and soaking up ideas that our DT members shared every week all these months. It’s been exciting, memorable & and fun to see all the unique and innovative creations and the various techniques that they shared. Thanks to all our lovely DT members Angela Jose, Juhi Khanna, Suchismita Chatterjee Dutta, Roshini, Suman Pandit, Sharada Dilip Acharya. We really appreciate the way you inspired us week after week with your out of the box, original creations.

In these months we have also moved forward introducing a whole new range of products from our home brand Little Birdie, like Gold Alcohol Splash, Shabby Chic and Classy Chic burlap stack packs, new paper packs, a variety of handmade flowers, embellishments, the Bling range, Texture Tack and Texture Triangles and the list is endless. But, what stole the Spotlight was the ‘Dream Cut’…the twin die cutting and embossing machine that works noiselessly with all standard dies. We also add new stores at Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad and Chandra Layout, Bangalore (the 19th). As always we promise to bring a whole lot more at pocket friendly prices! J

Our Social Media presence is going great guns, our Facebook group has 13K+ members & still counting. Not only that, more and more people seem to be appreciating our Instagram presence…we can tell from the increasing number of followers and the number of 💓. We have established a great bond with a large number of crafters & we cherish the interaction. We are also pinning creations of our group members on Pinterest so that the whole world can appreciate their talent.

It’s always hard to say goodbye! We want our outgoing Design Team members to know that they will be greatly missed. We once again thank each of them for their creative and inspiring projects & detailed tutorials every week. Suchismita will be continuing her journey with us and we are extremely happy about that.

Now it’s time to welcome the new dream team that comprises of very creative & talented professionals who come from varied backgrounds but with a common passion….need I say more??? Crafting!!! They are here to inspire you with their gorgeous, out of the box creations!

Before we see their creations let’s meet and hear from them

Hi there! I am Ann from Bangalore. For over 10 years, I have been designing digital apps and learning about how people experience digital products. I love art, craft and exploring creative techniques. My son and I spend quite some time together in our home studio creating something beautiful every day.

Hi, I’m Henriëtte van Mierlo and I live in Netherlands. I work four days a week in financial administration and in my spare time I love to craft. Card making is my favourite, especially CAS cards using all kinds of card making techniques. I have developed an interest in shabby chic cards, planner decorating and mixed media lately.  Other than this, I also love working with polymer clay or felt, watercoloring, making nylon/paper/fabric flowers and wire bending. Looking forward love to share my creation with my fellow crafters!!

I'm Rashmi Tater, an MBA by qualification but a crafter at heart….and I feel blessed for that! My mother, an artist herself has been my strongest motivation and nurturer of by hobby, which I've taken up as a full time profession. I love playing around with scraps and my supplies and every time get surprised to see the awesome creations they are capable of! Mixed media is my favourite but that does not stop me from exploring other creative arenas starting from baking, soap making, paper crafting, clay modelling, scrapbooking.

Hi this is Suchismitha from Hyderabad. I will be continuing as a DT member with the new team. I work at a professional services firm as a business editor. Travelling & treasuring those lovely memories in handmade albums are something that I love and that got me into the crafting world! Junk Journals happen to be my new addiction.

Hi, I am Charu, a self taught artist and an explorer and a creator from an early age. I am very passionate about art and craft.
Basically I am a watercolorist but Itsy Bitsy has given me more reasons to show my crafty side too. In fact, Itsy Bitsy products woke up the sleepy crafter in me. I love collaborating Itsy Bitsy products even with my paintings n drawings. Looking forward to share my creative ideas with you!!

Hi, this is Pooja from Gurgaon. I am a fashion designer but craft is my only passion. I love experimenting with new products and techniques and mixed media is my forte! Other than that I love altering things and making clay murals. I am looking forward to having a great time here at the Itsy Bitsy DT team.

Hi this is Mukta and I would like to introduce myself as a craft addict!! I am from Mumbai and have always been a crafter, at least since the time I can remember. Although I have completed my Masters in Engineering but I feel the connection only with craft and so I use my engineering skills for crafts, trying to make innovative projects. I am majorly into up-cycling, gift box making and wrapping, decoupaging, scrapbooking and stamping. My latest passion is Mixed Media.

Hi, I am Kathy Klersy. I have been a rubber stamper and paper crafter for more than 20 years now and the fun of it just never gets old for me! I am primarily a Card Maker, but I also dabble in mixed media, planners and scrapbooking. I love to challenge myself to try new products/techniques. I love being a part of the online crafting community because I enjoy sharing what I make with others, but I also enjoy being inspired by others. There is always something new to learn and try!

I am an engineer who quit working at the IT sector for the love of art. I presently work as a freelance artist and take orders for paintings. Since I work with a variety of mediums like acrylic, oil, coffee etc, I know around 40 art forms and conduct classes and workshops. I am very comfortable with fabric paints, glass paints, moulding clay, 3d cones, gums and glues for creating textures.

Hi I’m Charitha. Art, Craft and colour always gives me an adrenaline rush!! I love working with different mediums and with different kinds of equipments.  I have worked with few firms as a Graphic Designer in the U.S.A. Wanted to learn something new so, studied Interior Design and am now working as a freelance interior designer. Crafting has always been my hobby. Lately, I’ve mostly been into Decoupage, Sospeso & Mosaic art.

A Makeover with Handmade Lucinda Blush

Hi Ladies,

I am back at your favorite Itsy Bitsy blog today to show you the gorgeous handmade flowers from Itsy Bitsy store. The IB team was generous enough to send me these new entries to the store to try and I am loving every bit of these.
I have used Lucinda Blush flower set to give a fresh look to this metal clock.Another great launch by the store are the Burlap doilies (these are round burlap doilies with laminated back).
Since these are laminated at the back you can even use color splash sprays to give them a new look. Here I have used Lemon ZingHot PinkOcean Mist color splash sprays.

For the metal clock I have used white gesso before using the color splash sprays.
I have used sandpaper to give it a little distressed finish at the edges.

I have used resin embellishment, these are perfect for adding a classy, chic and elegant to look to any creative project.

Hope you liked the little alteration using these gorgeous flowers. Do leave some love in the comments..
Keep crafting
